Public goods that do not require upfront investment (unemployed)
When it comes to public goods that don't require specific outcomes or employment, it might actually be more effective to create things that individuals believe contribute to the public good and distribute funds accordingly, rather than setting specific results. Traditional public goods have been closed off, even though they involve elections (voting). Open-source public goods might actually be the strongest. Vitalik is interesting, after all.
When it comes to funding, focusing on making money rather than the public perspective tends to be more powerful. I used to think that crowdfunding was the future of politics for each policy. But direct democracy doesn't work so well. The public is foolish. If you can produce results for the public good, that can be appreciated. It might be a good style of funding.
In fields like public blockchain where there is no need for upfront investment or codebase, it might be suitable.
